Gin and tonic, ladies and gentleman y rock and roll son tres de las expresiones binomiales más escuchadas, pero ¿qué tienen en común entre ellas?
Las tres son frases binomiales, es decir word pairs de la misma categoría gramatical (sustantivo + sustantivo) que van unidas por una conjunción, las más comunes son and y or pero también existen algunas expresiones binomiales unidas con las preposiciones by, after, for, in y to o simplemente con un guión (-).
¿Cómo se pueden clasificar los binomios?
Podemos hacerlo por su sonoridad, por la clase de palabras que lo integran y por su categoría gramatical.
- Según la construcción sonora
Hay expresiones binomiales que están compuestas por dos palabras que comienzan con la misma letra, suenan parecido o que hacen rima. Algunos ejemplos son: part and parcel, safe and sound, chalk and cheese, wine and dine.
- Según la clase de palabras que lo integran
Pueden haber pares de sinónimos como pick and choose o peace and quiet, cuasi sinónimos como bag and baggage y antónimas como sweet and sour, dawn till dusk, back and forth. También hay algunos casos en los que las palabras se repiten como cheek to cheek o time after time.
- Según la categoría gramatical
Podemos encontrar binomios compuestos por preposiciones como to and fro, adverbios como as and when, sustantivos como part and parcel, verbos como live and learn y adjetivos como safe and sound.
Algunas claves de las expresiones binomiales
#1 Puedes usarlas en contextos formales e informales
#2 La mayoría son irreversibles, es decir que el orden de las dos palabras es siempre el mismo. Si se altera este orden, dejan de sonar naturales e incluso en algunos casos puede variar su significado.
#3 Hay casos en los que son reversibles y se puede cambiar el orden. Un ejemplo es salt and pepper. En su forma más utilizada se refiere a las especias, pero en su forma reversible, pepper and salt, se refiere al color de cabello entre negro, gris y blanco, o al patrón o tejido de una tela.
¿Existen trinomios también?
Así es, la diferencia con las expresiones binomiales es que los trinomios consisten en 3 palabras principales que aparecen juntas en un orden específico. Algunos de los ejemplos más comunes son:
- beg, borrow and steal
- blood, sweat, and tears
- cool, calm, and collected
- could’ve, would’ve, should’ve
- eat, drink and be merry
- good, bad, or indifferent
- here, there, and everywhere
- hook, line, and sinker
- hop, skip, and jump
- left, right and center
- lock, stock, and barrel
- morning, noon, and night
- nasty, brutish, and short
- ready, willing, and able
- this, that, and the other
- way, shape, or form
Ejemplos de expresiones binomiales para implementar a diario
Back and forth 👉 de aquí para allá, de un lado a otro. También significa dudar, dar vueltas. Ejemplo: I won’t be able to meet you this week, I’m flying back and forth between London and Madrid.
Bread and butter 👉 tu fuente de ingresos. Ejemplo: Football is his bread and butter. If he gets injured, that’ll be the end of his career.
Done and dusted 👉 finiquitado, acabado. Ejemplo: It’s been a crazy week, but at least the accounts are done and dusted.
Dos and don’ts 👉 normas, pautas, qué hacer y qué no hacer. Ejemplo: Here’s a list of dos and don’ts for anyone staying in this house.
chalk and cheese 👉 opuestos, muy diferentes (como la noche y el día). Literalmente quiere decir como la tiza y el queso. Ejemplo: My parents are like chalk and cheese, mum loves going out and dad loves staying in watching films or reading.
Live and learn 👉 viviendo se aprende. Ejemplo: Well, I’ve learned from my mistake, you know, live and learn.
Lost and found 👉 forma de llamar a la oficina de objetos perdidos. Ejemplo: Someone forgot their jumper. I’ll take it to the lost and found office.
Loud and clear 👉 alto y claro, sin lugar a dudas, sin malentendidos. Ejemplo: The message from the CEO came through loud and clear. The company was facing financial issues.
Neat and tidy 👉 limpio y ordenado. Ejemplo: I hope your room is neat and tidy when I return home; otherwise, you’ll be in trouble.
Now and then 👉 a veces, de vez en cuando. Ejemplo: I go surfing every now and then.
Peace and quiet 👉 tranquilidad, calma, paz. Ejemplo: I rented a house in the mountains this weekend. Finally, I’ll get some peace and quiet.
Pros and cons 👉 pros y contras. Ejemplo: Living in a big city like New York has pros and cons.
Rain or shine 👉 pase lo que pase, llueva o truene. Ejemplo: I’m going to marry you tomorrow, come rain or shine.
Safe and sound 👉 sano y salvo. Ejemplo: Why didn’t you call us? Thank goodness you’re all safe and sound.
Short and sweet 👉 conciso, breve. Ejemplo: That was a brilliant speech, short and sweet.
Sick and tired 👉 harto, hasta las narices. Ejemplo: I’m sick and tired of your dog stealing my socks and making holes in them.
Ups and downs 👉 altibajos. Ejemplo: She had her ups and downs after the divorce, but she’s much happier now.
